Special Education Teacher

About the role

The school offers a Special Education program inspired by the idea that every person has great potential, and its goal is to uncover and nurture it. The program follows the Education Department's supplementary curriculum guide and is built around Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), serving students with autism, Down syndrome and other mild intellectual disabilities or learning difficulties. It is taught by a team of four to five teachers supporting about twelve students, with personalized academic learning combined with life skills, social growth and confidence building, and speech therapy where appropriate.

Key responsibilities

• Teach full-time special needs children in a classroom setting.
• Organize specialized educational learning resources.
• Work with staff to identify each student's needs and create a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment.
• Liaise with outside professionals as necessary.
• Meet the requirements for assessing and recording pupils' development.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (not a Master's) in Special Education, including at least one assessed teaching practice in a school for grades 7 to 12 (non-negotiable).
• Fluency in English, the medium of instruction.

• Annual base salary of about US$44,000 after tax, slightly higher with experience, plus housing allowance; additional allowances and bonuses are also available.

Schedule: 36 working hours per week, made up of up to twenty 45-minute teaching periods, responsibilities and planning time. About 30 days of Macau and school holidays and about 50 days of summer holidays, with monthly Saturday work. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; immediate start preferred.
